New tablet for Christmas? Don't panic, read on...

Whilst we don't condone second-guessing what Santa may bring, or sneaking a peak at the gifts under your tree, we do predict that, come Christmas morning, many more Wrexham and Flintshire residents will be the (delete as appropriate) proud / petrified / perturbed owners of a shiny new tablet computer.

We've searched the internet to find two of the best articles offering hints and tips for new tablet users:

Gizmo's Freeware 'The Best Android Tips and Tricks' page from November 2013 provides a concise overview of the Android operating system and an index allowing you to easily locate the help and advice you need.

Digital Unite's 'Guide to Tablet computers' provides information written in plain English for those encountering iPads for the first time.  Overviews of the Kindle Fire and the Samsung Galaxy Tab can be found here too.

So, whether you're a new tablet owner, or know someone who is, we hope you find these useful.

Come the New Year, the 'Get online Wrexham Flintshire' team will continue to offer FREE, informal 'Absolute Beginners' courses to people with little or no experience of computers and the internet.  If you're reading this, you may not fall into this category, however, if you know someone who does, please encourage them to get in touch, and help us in our mission to ensure more local people benefit from the internet, as both citizens and consumers.

Hesitant about giving the internet a try? Watch this!

Alison attended our Absolute Beginners course at Connah's Quay library in May.

We're very grateful to Alison for sharing her experience and we hope her words will inspire local people to get in touch and find out more about what the internet is, how you can benefit from using it and how to get online and try it for yourself.

DIGITAL INCLUSION IN NORTH WALES - OCTOBER 8TH 2013 - LLANDUDNO JUNCTION

To highlight the collaborative approach to Digital Inclusion in North Wales we are joint-hosting an event with our colleagues from across North Wales to show stakeholders, decision makers and the general public the benefits of being online, and our efforts to achieve this goal. The Event will be held at Conwy Business Centre Llandudno Junction in the County of Conwy. This is ideally placed equidistant along the North Wales coast and just 1 minute off the A55 Expressway. GET ONLINE WREXHAM FLINTSHIRE WELCOME NEW DIGITAL CHAMPION VOLUNTEERS

Get online Wrexham Flintshire, the project working to increase internet use amongst local people, is pleased to announce that its first cohort of digital champion volunteers has completed initial training.  Each member of the group is an asset to the project, working very well as a supportive team, showing great dedication and entertaining the facilitators throughout the two-day 'train the trainer' course.

Volunteers are vital to the project, delivering basic internet skills training to people throughout Wrexham and Flintshire. With around 32 percent of the local population having little or no experience of the internet, our champions are ready, able and eager to welcome learners into the online world, and allow them to experience its benefits first hand with an Absolute Beginners training course. The six-hour course is delivered over two or three sessions at libraries and centres across Wrexham and Flintshire.

To book a place on a course, or to find out more about the project, please contact:

Digital Leaders Course

The second part of the Digital Leaders course run by Sangeet Bhullar of Wise Kids was completed recently leaving the group of Digital Officers across North Wales (including our team in NE Wales) with even more scope to deliver on digital inclusion.  The course covered aspects such as Social Media and the use of such applications as Facebook and Skype, as well as covering blogging, and how to do it effectively.

It gives North Wales a unique opportunity with a group of skilled and committed individuals keen to take these skills into the communities to pass them on.

Well done to all, and thanks to Sangeet.

Are we EVER too old?

It is sometimes suggested that older people might have less use for ICT than their younger counterparts?  A recent 'taster session' by the team in Flint certainly turns this thinking on its head. We will simply post the link here to a brief YouTube clip of Evelyn, aged 100 years, being given the opportunity to speak to her niece in France via Skype, and leave people to make their own minds up.

Welcome to a Digital Age

Get Online Wrexham Flintshire is set up to provide people who would not normally be able to access the internet with the means to do so. In this Digital Age it is important to realise the implications of NOT being online.
If you are reading this blog then necessarily you are not the sort of person we are trying to reach necessarily however, you could be a link to people in the community who are digitally excluded.

Do you know someone who could benefit from learning about computers or the Internet? How much do YOU understand about the way we have gone digital?

Watch this video about the Social Media Revolution, and be astounded!

About

Get Online Wrexham Flintshire is a cross-county collaboration between both local authorities and CVCs to deliver Digital Inclusion in the region.
It is part of an overall Digital Inclusion Strategy from Welsh Government that funds Communities 2.0, an all-Wales project.

There are over 70,000 people classed as being digitally excluded in that they either have no access to or ability to use the internet or computers in general and this puts them at a great disadvantage in a digital age.
The team works across both counties to deliver training and engagement sessions to promote the use of online facilities such as information websites and shopping.
